All drugs are poison!! this statement may be amazing to some people, but we should never forget it. Drugs are substances from plant, animal, mineral and in recent times nano-technology, which are used in the diagnosis, prevention, management and treatment of diseases. The drug in its dosage form (example tablets, capsules etc) consists of the active (the main drug) and inactive constituents (additives) mixed together to produce a drug product in a tablet, capsules, syrup, suspension and so on. Drugs are used in a specified recommended amount called a "dose" and it is the dose of the drug that makes it either a poison or a remedy."Everything is poisonous, and nothing is poisonous, it is all the matter of the dose" -Claude Bernard. Drugs are considered poisons when they are used in large doses more than the recommended doses and are safe when used in the required amount. Furthermore, any drug that has a beneficial effect also has a side effect, in some cases the side effect is independent of the dose. Drugs are may also be considered poison when they are used inappropriately. Example; when use to treat a wrong disease, wrongly administered, when the drug interact with another drug, food or disease or when the drug has expired, adulterated, or has lost potency due to poor storage and handling. So, when dealing with drugs, care has to be taken in taking the recommended dose at the right time and route of the drug administration as prescribed by the prescriber and/or as directed by the pharmacist. The pharmacist and other health caregivers should ensure adequate patient education through counselling to be sure that the drugs the dispensed did not turn out to be a poison. The government should ensure adequate regulation and control of drugs and other consumables throughout their lifecycle, to prevent adulterated, fake and substandard drugs in circulation and the use of less potent drugs due to poor storage and handling (example vaccines).
